Chapter Sixty-Nine

23rd of Fastmonth

We begin our charge for the walls, and we hear them sound horns from inside.  Sir Ulric and Sir Finn slam a ladder up against the wall, and begin to climb.  The men atop the walls begin to throw large rocks down the ladder.  Once Ulric has mounted the wall, he yells, “Throw down your weapons and you may be spared!”  None of them break, so he begins charging down the wall.  Korvinean begins picking off the guards on the wall.  Briggette is next up, and she follows her husband.  The rest of us make our way up the ladder as Ulric leads the way down the wall, cutting down several men in his path.
When he comes to the first tower, he and Briggette bust down the door to find a large room with two men shooting through arrow slits on the other side of the tower.  Their backs are to our heroes, and their deaths are nearly instantaneously.   We make our way down through the tower and out into the town.  As we are fighting, a flying man comes out from behind a building and casts a fireball on us, but he, too, quickly meets his maker.  Another magic user pops up and swipes at me with a glowing hand, but I dodge the blow just as Korvinean plants several arrows in his chest.
We keep moving along the wall until we reach the gatehouse, which is heavily guarded.  Ulric and Finn bust down the door of the first tower, and make their way to the top level, taking on any enemy forces along the way.  When they get to the top, they hear the trap door to the top floor get locked.  I am able to get through the bar latching it closed, but it takes a few moments.  Ulric throws the door open, and the men pour boiling water on him.  He and Finn kill the men and begin to turn the crank to open the gates.  Apparently, the crank only opens one of the four gates—there must be one in each tower.
Ulric hears some of the guys from below yell up, “We could use some help down here!”  Briggette, who has made her way to the roof, jumps off of the side of the tower to land on a very large man who is trying to get in the door at the bottom.  He stands a full six and half feet tall and is nearly three feet wide.  She lands feet first on his shoulders before they both tumble to the ground.  Immediately, she gets up and slices at one of the other men with him.  Shortly, the rest of us join in the fray, and this small force is defeated.
We move on to the next tower to open at least one side of the gate completely.  This one is more heavily fortified, but we are able to fight our way through its amped-up defenses with no problems.  As soon as we get this second door open, we can hear multiple horns, and our men begin to charge for the gate.  Briggette summons Chancellor and leads them in the attack.
By the time thirty minutes have passed, our men are obliterating the city.  The captain of the Hooves of Heaven comes to seek Ulric’s help in trying to take a fortified two story house a bit further in.  He says that they are well armed and well trained and that they cannot get inside.  We go to the house in question, then I break through the trap and lock in order to get us in.  We fight the people inside, and I find a secret door which leads to a spiral staircase heading down into the earth.  Across a narrow ledge, there is a small landing with a wardrobe on it.  The wardrobe has a place to hang clothes but none are there.  The bottom of the wardrobe contains several large jars of scented oils.  I take a few of these with me and follow Ulric down the stairs.
It leads about sixty feet down and opens up into a very large room, about 40’ x 40’, which has been carved carefully from the bedrock.  Directly across from us, the wall has several carvings that appear to be written partially in Abyssal and partially in some sort of magical language.  We send Finn to get the Chapeau.  As we are looking at the wall, a beam of blackness flies forth from the wall and strikes Briggette in the chest.  In the blink of an eye, it is gone.  Rather than wait for Finn to get back with the Chapeau, Briggette pulls out a scroll and begins to cast break enchantment.  The wall in that area begins to develop cracks, and the magical symbols begin to glow.  After a few moments, the wall literally breaks apart and crumbles.  Behind it, we see an open black hallway that is forty feet wide.
